On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada in 1987, the Institute for Palestine Studies held from 24 to 30 November 2017 in Birzeit, Gaza and Beirut, a conference entitled: “The 1987 Intifada: History and Memory”. This book is based on papers, interventions and testimonies presented during the conference, all of which were subject to review and scrutiny.
The authors reflect diverse political perspectives, coming from a wide range of fields: from education to science, from trade to art. Some of them participated in the events under discussion, while others were too young at that time. Nonetheless, they gathered to address the causes and consequences of events going back one generation.
All these things made of this book a first and unique publication of its kind, providing multi-dimensional and multi-generational perspectives of the intifada, and looking into the key to a Palestinian future drenched in a turbulent and contradictory past.
As such, it targets a diverse readership, specialists and and non-specialists alike, seeking to better understand a fundamental chapter in the history of Palestine, the Middle East, and the world.
